What you will do
- Lead advanced applied research into drilling, production, completions, intervention, integrity, and related upstream challenges.
- Develop, test, qualify, and validate drilling technologies, tools, materials, methodologies, and digital solutions through laboratory studies, simulations, field trials, and operational pilots.
- Analyse drilling, operational, well, facility, and subsurface data using predictive modelling, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics.
- Translate research findings into practical engineering solutions, technical standards, operating practices, and decision-support tools.
- Lead significant research projects and workstreams, managing priorities, risks, dependencies, funding proposals, and measurable operational value.
- Build partnerships with universities, research institutes, technology providers, operators, service companies, and industry organisations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degree in petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, applied physics, or a closely related discipline.
- Typically 15+ years of relevant experience in drilling technology, research, engineering, or a related upstream discipline.
- Strong experience designing and delivering applied research programmes and progressing technologies from concept through development, qualification, field validation, and deployment.
- Deep technical expertise in at least one drilling technology discipline and the ability to solve complex challenges using scientific evidence, operational data, and engineering judgement.
- Experience preparing technical reports, scientific publications, presentations, management briefings, invention disclosures, or similar research outputs.
- Collaborative experience working with multidisciplinary teams and external research partners.
Nice to have
- Chartered Engineer, European Engineer, or equivalent professional accreditation.
- PMP, PRINCE2, or equivalent project management certification.
- Experience with patents, invention disclosures, technology licensing agreements, or commercially deployed technologies.
- Recognised technical innovation and industry leadership.
