TL;DR
Senior AI Search Engineer (AI/Search): Building the retrieval layer behind product discovery for enterprise commerce catalogs with an accent on semantic and hybrid retrieval, query understanding, vector indexing, and multi-tenant scalability. Focus on designing fast and cost-efficient search capabilities, improving relevance measurably, and operating production systems through on-call rotations.
Location: Hybrid, with three days per week in an office in Munich, Berlin, London, or Valencia

What you will do
- Design and implement search functionality in a PaaS e-commerce backend built with Scala.
- Build and evolve scalable, multi-tenant retrieval architecture for product discovery.
- Work on semantic and hybrid retrieval, query understanding, vector indexes, relevance, latency, and query cost.
- Analyze user needs and evaluate technical approaches with Product Management and DevOps.
- Test software components for usability, functionality, and performance.
- Participate in on-call rotations for production systems with a worldwide distributed team.
Requirements
- Senior-level experience with 5+ years as a Software Engineer working in search.
- Experience building search solutions with Elasticsearch, Solr, OpenSearch, or similar engines.
- Fluent English communication skills for working in international teams.
- Curiosity about using AI tools to improve engineering effectiveness and willingness to apply them in the role.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to simplify complex technical topics.
Nice to have
- Experience with vector search, hybrid search, learning to rank, or re-rankers.
- Experience developing REST APIs and working with scalable event-driven architectures, queues, notification topics, sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover.
- Experience with Scala or other functional programming languages.
- Infrastructure experience with Helm, Kubernetes, or Rust.
