Staff AI Engineer (Generative AI)

Location: Remote; candidates can be based in the United States, UK, Ireland, Germany, Portugal, Spain, or the Netherlands

Salary: $170,000–$210,000 USD per year, plus a 5–10% performance-based bonus

What you will do

• Shape the technical direction and architecture of Research Flow, including AI-assisted study design, adaptive conversations, and research synthesis.
• Design and build generative AI applications using large language models, RAG, vector search, tool use, and agentic systems.
• Build reusable AI services, APIs, machine learning pipelines, and infrastructure with Python, AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes.
• Improve retrieval, model orchestration, experimentation, deployment, observability, reliability, performance, and cost efficiency.
• Define evaluation strategies, automated benchmarks, release criteria, monitoring, security, privacy, and safeguards for AI systems.
• Lead cross-team technical initiatives, mentor engineers, and connect AI engineering decisions to customer and business outcomes.

Requirements

• Significant experience building and operating machine learning or AI systems in production, with technical leadership beyond individual projects.
• Strong Python and software engineering skills, including production services and APIs with frameworks such as FastAPI.
• Practical experience with generative AI, large language models, enterprise RAG, retrieval architecture, chunking, embeddings, reranking, evaluation, and monitoring.
• Experience with technologies such as PyTorch, LangChain, LangGraph, vector databases, Kafka, MLflow, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD.
• Experience designing cloud systems, machine learning workflows, event-driven processing, observability, and production incident diagnosis.
• Ability to influence technical decisions across teams, make trade-offs explicit, mentor engineers, and improve engineering standards.

Nice to have

• Experience in a B2B SaaS product company or with conversational AI, adaptive interviewing, automated analysis, and summarisation.
• Experience with text, audio, or video AI applications and shared AI platforms used by multiple product teams.
• Experience with Airflow, Argo Workflows, SQL, Spark, Snowflake, AI security, privacy, prompt injection protection, or data leakage prevention.
• Experience materially improving the latency, reliability, or cost of AI systems at scale.
