Staff Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States; primary location at 1375 Crossman Ave. Onsite home office role.

Salary: $143,000–$286,000 annual, plus performance-based bonuses and possible stock compensation.

What you will do

• Design and build highly scalable backend microservices with Java and Spring Boot.
• Architect real-time event-driven systems using Apache Kafka.
• Develop and optimize large-scale batch and streaming data pipelines with Apache Spark.
• Drive architecture decisions covering scalability, resiliency, observability, cost efficiency, and cloud-native infrastructure.
• Lead design reviews, establish distributed-systems engineering practices, and collaborate with Product, Data Science, Platform, and Infrastructure teams.
• Optimize performance through partitioning, caching, asynchronous processing, and concurrency tuning while mentoring engineers and improving platform reliability.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or a related field plus 4 years of software engineering experience, or 6 years of relevant experience.
• Expertise in cloud-native architecture, microservices, containers, and automation.
• Strong knowledge of software design patterns, API design, platform development, testing, CI/CD, and observability.
• Experience leading software development lifecycle activities, design reviews, debugging, and distributed-systems development.
• Demonstrated technical leadership, mentoring, data-driven problem solving, and cross-functional collaboration.

Nice to have

• Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or a related field.
• Knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility best practices.
