TL;DR
Senior Fuel Cycle and Blanket Mechanical Engineer (Fusion Energy): Designing and delivering pilot-scale molten salt process equipment and fluid systems for fusion energy development with an accent on high-temperature FLiBe systems, ASME equipment, piping, and supplier coordination. Focus on specifying, commissioning, and improving tanks, heat exchangers, valves, pumps, and piping while managing corrosion, hazardous fluid service, pipe stress, and industrial safety challenges.

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States. On-site role with occasional travel to suppliers and support for commissioning and testing activities.

Salary: $110,000–$185,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

  • Lead and contribute to fluid process system designs for testing at multiple scales.
  • Develop specifications and designs for high-temperature molten salt equipment, including vessels, tanks, valves, pumps, heat exchangers, and piping systems.
  • Serve as the technical lead for suppliers and construction teams during procurement, installation, and commissioning.
  • Support fixed-equipment mechanical reliability, pipe stress evaluations, and component design improvements.
  • Collaborate with engineering, scientific, technical, supplier, and construction teams to incorporate R&D learnings and system requirements.
  • Track project milestones, report progress, and maintain a strong focus on industrial safety.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent field.
  • 8+ years of professional experience designing industrial-scale fixed equipment and high-temperature components.
  • Detailed knowledge of ASME BPVC and ASME B31.3 for process equipment and piping design.
  • Experience with hazardous fluid service, external partner and supplier management, P&IDs, CAD, process flow diagrams, and heat and mass balance analysis.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary engineering teams and communicate, critique, and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, work around industrial hazards, and support on-site commissioning and testing.

Nice to have

  • Experience in a refinery, chemical plant, or heavy industrial facility.
  • Experience with corrosive fluid systems, molten salt systems, electrochemical systems, or rotating equipment.
  • Familiarity with ASME Sections I and VIII, API 510, API 570, and API 579.
  • Experience with pipe stress and support analysis or vessel nozzle load and stress analysis.
