What you will do

• Design hardware and controls for bespoke reel-to-reel process machines.
• Act as the technical authority for web handling, tension control, steering, winding dynamics, and in-line process modules.
• Design electromechanical equipment for fragile high-temperature superconducting tape with zero-defect tolerance.
• Manage external vendors and system integrators delivering large-scale manufacturing equipment.
• Develop in-line inspection systems using computer vision and laser interferometry.
• Identify manufacturing bottlenecks and implement automation to improve throughput, yield, and reliability.

Requirements

• BS, MS, or PhD in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of experience designing and commissioning complex reel-to-reel equipment.
• Expertise with Beckhoff, TwinCAT 3, EtherCAT, and structured text programming.
• Expertise in 3D CAD, preferably NX, with FEA or multibody dynamics simulation.
• Ability to solve first-of-a-kind engineering challenges without off-the-shelf solutions.
• Experience with taper tension, specialized winding algorithms, or delicate-material applications is valuable.
