Senior Mechanical Engineer - Remote Maintenance (Fusion Energy)

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; on-site. Occasional travel, nights, weekends, or on-call work may be required; travel is expected up to 15%.

Salary: $110,000–$185,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

hirify.global Systems is developing commercially viable fusion power plants, including ARC, a commercial fusion power plant designed to deliver reliable clean energy to the grid.

What you will do

• Develop the concept of operations for ARC’s remote maintenance system and participate in the plant’s pre-conceptual design.
• Design radiation-hardened remote handling equipment using robotics, custom hardware, and remotely operated heavy-lift equipment.
• Assess tokamak and plant maintainability and collaborate with tokamak engineering teams on remotely maintainable joints and systems.
• Perform multidisciplinary trade studies spanning physics, neutronics, structures, materials, manufacturing, maintenance, and techno-economics.
• Lead and coordinate internal and external R&D campaigns, including work with remote handling and robotics organizations.
• Establish design guidelines for remote handling equipment, the tokamak, and the plant.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in structural, mechanical, or aerospace engineering.
• At least 7 years of mechanical engineering experience designing, fabricating, testing, integrating, operating, or commissioning complex mechanical structures.
• At least 7 years of technical experience designing remote handling equipment with robotics or remotely operated precision mechanical structures.
• Experience leading R&D campaigns for novel remote maintenance technologies and increasing technology readiness levels.
• Experience with actuation, guidance mechanisms, sensing, structural mechanisms, hand calculations, and finite element analysis; Ansys preferred.
• Familiarity with CAD; NX preferred. Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, communicate and critique ideas clearly, and maintain a strong safety focus.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in structural, mechanical, or aerospace engineering.
• Experience with radiation-hardened equipment, mechatronics, applied robotics, rescue or decommissioning equipment, or remotely operated facility layouts.
• Knowledge of sensing, controls, high-power and fluid systems, ultra-high vacuum, fault management, welding, machining, metals, and composites.
• Experience with activated waste handling, remote cleanliness methods, industrial maintenance facility layouts, or complex integrated systems.
• Experience using NX, data-driven decision-making, and end-to-end engineering processes.
