Professional Liability Claims Counsel

Location: Remote - New York

Salary: $95,000–$135,000 annual

What you will do

• Investigate, evaluate, and manage complex professional liability claims from inception through resolution.
• Analyze coverage, policy terms, conditions, exclusions, liability, and damages.
• Establish and update reserves, prepare financial forecasts, and report on claims portfolios.
• Develop resolution strategies, negotiate settlements, and guide discovery, motion practice, mediation, and trial preparation.
• Communicate claim updates and coverage determinations to insureds, brokers, management, carriers, reinsurers, and auditors.
• Provide claims insights to underwriting and risk management teams, including emerging exposures, loss drivers, and prevention strategies.

Requirements

• NYS Adjuster License required; licenses in multiple states are preferred.
• 3–5 years of experience handling professional liability claims.
• Strong knowledge of claims practices, litigation processes, and insurance coverage.
• Experience managing complex or high-exposure claims and making independent judgment decisions.
• Strong negotiation, analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with claims management systems and Microsoft Office; a JD degree is preferred.

Nice to have

• Experience in education, public entity, EPLI, or E&O claims.
• Prior litigation experience or a legal background.
• Familiarity with excess and surplus lines, specialty insurance markets, reinsurance reporting, or complex coverage issues.
