TL;DR
Public Benefit Specialist (Healthcare): Interviewing uninsured and under-insured patients, determining Medicaid and financial assistance eligibility, and coordinating applications with an accent on patient communication, insurance processes, and accurate documentation. Focus on following applications through determination, updating insurance information, and collaborating with Medicaid caseworkers and revenue cycle teams.

Location: On-site at Ballad - Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee; limited to individuals residing and authorized to work in the United States. Schedule: Monday–Friday, 1:00 PM–9:30 PM.

Salary: $18.65–$20.50 per hour, based on experience.

What you will do

  • Review uninsured and under-insured patient referrals to identify Medicaid and financial assistance eligibility.
  • Coordinate applications and obtain the documents required for accurate submissions.
  • Follow applications through determination and update insurance information.
  • Document patient communications and actions in patient accounting systems.
  • Maintain knowledge of state and federal program requirements.
  • Collaborate with Medicaid caseworkers and revenue cycle departments to support timely billing or adjustment processing.

Requirements

  • 1–2 years of healthcare industry experience involving patient interaction about hospital financial issues.
  • High school diploma or GED; relevant post-secondary education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Understanding of revenue cycle processes, including admissions, billing, payments, and denials.
  • Knowledge of health insurance requirements, authorizations, benefits verification, medical terminology, or CPT and procedure codes.
  • Must be inquisitive and open to using innovation, including AI, to improve processes and patient experiences.
  • Must reside in and be authorized to work within the United States.

Nice to have

  • Patient Access experience with managed care or insurance.
  • Call center experience.
