Senior Linux Systems Engineer (Ubuntu Core)

What you will do

• Own the Ubuntu Core platform, including kernels, base snaps, patching, image management, and end-of-life planning.
• Operate safe fleet deployment pipelines with channels, tracks, staged rollouts, canaries, health checks, and rollback.
• Maintain Ubuntu Frame/Mir, Wayland, X11, GPU drivers, and remote display systems on embedded and server-class hardware.
• Improve application stability and performance through resource limits, service supervision, profiling, and OS-level tuning.
• Own security hardening, vulnerability management, access control, secure boot, disk encryption, audit logging, and incident response support.
• Lead and mentor engineers, set infrastructure priorities, and maintain documentation, runbooks, and fleet tooling.

Requirements

• 8+ years of production Linux systems experience with strong knowledge of kernel, boot, init, storage, and networking internals.
• Experience deploying and updating Linux at fleet scale, including Ubuntu Core, snap packaging and confinement, channels, tracks, transactional updates, and rollback.
• Experience keeping production applications stable and performant on Linux, including profiling and performance debugging.
• Strong security experience with advisories, attack-surface reduction, patching, and vulnerability triage.
• Hands-on experience with display servers and GPU stacks beyond desktop environments.
• Experience leading or mentoring engineers, plus scripting with Bash or Python and observability tooling such as Prometheus or Grafana.

Nice to have

• Experience with IoT or edge-device fleets, constrained hardware, intermittent connectivity, remote provisioning, and recovery.
• Experience building custom Ubuntu Core images, gadget and kernel snaps, brand stores, or confined snap packages.
• Familiarity with immutable operating systems such as ostree or NixOS.
• Kernel module or driver debugging experience and cloud familiarity with AWS, GCP, or similar platforms.
• Exposure to SOC 2, ISO 27001, or CIS benchmarks.
