Staff Software Engineer (Backend) - Payments

Location: Santa Ana, California, United States. Candidates within a 1-hour commuting distance may be expected to work onsite most of the time. Candidates must be able to work legally in the United States; employment eligibility is validated through E-Verify.

What you will do

• Own the end-to-end architecture of the Payments domain, including C#/.NET services, APIs, frontends, data stores, AWS, Kubernetes, and event-driven systems.
• Define multi-gateway strategy across Stripe, PayPal, and other providers, leading payment-method expansion, migrations, settlement, refunds, and reconciliation.
• Set standards for PCI-DSS practices, tokenization, idempotency, webhook reliability, testing, observability, security, and resilience.
• Lead multi-quarter projects across Payments, Marketplace, Grading, Vault, Finance, Security, and platform teams.
• Mentor engineers through design reviews, pairing, feedback, documentation, and technical discussions.
• Establish guardrails for AI coding tools and improve AI-assisted engineering workflows.

Requirements

• 8+ years of engineering experience and technical leadership of multi-engineer, multi-quarter projects.
• Expert-level C#/.NET backend engineering, including complex APIs, asynchronous patterns, and distributed data consistency.
• Production experience across React, Svelte, TypeScript, APIs, services, data stores, and infrastructure.
• Deep payments or fintech expertise, including gateway integrations, tokenization, idempotency, webhooks, reconciliation, and PCI compliance.
• Strong experience with relational and NoSQL databases, Kafka-based event-driven systems, AWS, Kubernetes, and CDK or Terraform.
• Experience with observability, security, incident response, Agile/Scrum, and AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Copilot, or Cursor.
