Principal Software Engineer (Electron/Chromium)

Location: Hybrid position based out of hirify.global's Sheffield office, United Kingdom, combining in-person collaboration in Sheffield with work across distributed engineering teams.

What you will do

• Define and evolve the architecture of a reusable Electron and Chromium-based desktop platform for hirify.global web applications.
• Design, implement, prototype, and review complex functionality across Electron, Chromium, Node.js, TypeScript, Windows APIs, and native components.
• Establish secure communication patterns, process isolation, application trust boundaries, native API exposure, and navigation controls.
• Lead Electron and Chromium version strategy, runtime qualification, security updates, packaging, signing, release promotion, and rollback requirements.
• Guide engineers through technical decisions, mentor team members, review complex changes, and establish engineering standards.
• Collaborate with security, quality, release, graphics, identity, distribution, telemetry, and product teams to ensure the platform is testable, diagnosable, supportable, and production-ready.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience and experience designing complex software systems or platform capabilities.
• Strong experience with JavaScript or TypeScript, Node.js, Electron, Chromium-based applications, desktop development, or comparable systems-level platforms.
• Strong understanding of application architecture, process boundaries, asynchronous systems, security, software lifecycle management, and debugging across multiple layers.
• Experience leading technical design across multiple engineers, mentoring engineers, and influencing cross-team technical decisions.
• Experience with automated testing, continuous integration, source control, code review, and modern software delivery practices.

Nice to have

• Experience with Electron main, renderer, and preload processes, context isolation, inter-process communication, and security configuration.
• Knowledge of Chromium architecture, runtime configuration, feature flags, release lifecycle, developer tooling, GN, or Ninja.
• Experience with C++, native Node.js modules, Windows APIs, application packaging, installers, code signing, updating, or enterprise deployment.
• Experience diagnosing memory, process, performance, startup, or crash issues in Chromium-based or native desktop applications.
• Experience with shared APIs, SDKs, runtimes, platform components, threat modeling, software supply-chain security, and release provenance.
