Senior Software Engineer (Electron/Chromium)

Location: Hybrid position based out of hirify.global's Sheffield office, United Kingdom

What you will do

• Design, implement, and own significant areas of a reusable Electron desktop platform, including process architecture, native integrations, web-to-desktop interfaces, and application lifecycle.
• Configure and integrate the Chromium runtime, manage Electron and Chromium upgrades, evaluate compatibility and performance, and recommend adoption approaches.
• Build Windows integrations for hardware discovery, process management, application protocols, GPU preferences, system configuration, and enterprise desktop behavior.
• Design secure boundaries between hosted web applications and privileged desktop functionality using process isolation, navigation controls, API exposure, and inter-process communication.
• Diagnose runtime, memory, startup, security, operating-system, and application-integration issues using profiling, debugging, crash diagnostics, and telemetry tools.
• Contribute to architecture and security decisions, technical documentation, release reliability, code reviews, and mentoring across the platform team.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience and a track record of independently delivering complex features from design through production.
• Strong JavaScript or TypeScript and Node.js development experience.
• Experience developing Electron applications, Chromium-based applications, native desktop software, or comparable systems-level platforms.
• Strong understanding of application architecture, asynchronous programming, process boundaries, security, software lifecycle management, debugging, automated testing, source control, code review, and continuous integration.
• Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement from the Sheffield office; in-person onboarding or identity verification may be required.

Nice to have

• Deep Electron architecture experience, including main, renderer, preload, context isolation, inter-process communication, and security configuration.
• Chromium architecture, runtime configuration, feature flags, release cycles, build systems, or GN and Ninja tooling.
• C++, native Node.js modules, Windows systems programming, or Windows desktop APIs.
• Experience with Chromium diagnostics, memory and crash analysis, Windows installers, application signing, enterprise deployment, or application updating.
• Experience designing shared APIs and platform components, threat modeling, secure desktop applications, or mentoring engineers.
