Senior Backend Engineer - Databases - Analytics (AI)

Location: Remote; applicants should be located in Spain, Sweden, the UK, Ireland, or Germany

Base compensation in Germany: EUR 97,000–121,000 annually, plus equity, bonus where applicable, and other benefits.

What you will do

• Design, implement, test, and operate database components including ingestion, query planning, distributed query execution, data formats, and storage formats.
• Build a scalable multi-tenant SaaS database foundation with tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs, background jobs, and reliable service boundaries.
• Develop APIs and database interfaces for AI agents, MCP tools, CLIs, and internal applications to retrieve enterprise data and context.
• Collaborate across product and infrastructure to evolve the platform from prototype and internal dogfooding to production-grade SaaS.
• Instrument and operate database services using metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and dashboards.
• Shape architecture, storage choices, API contracts, deployment patterns, and engineering practices for a new product area.

Requirements

• Strong experience building production-grade, user-facing software with ownership of complex engineering decisions.
• Experience with distributed systems, catalogs, table formats, and query engines.
• Mastery of a programming language such as Golang, C++, or Rust.
• Experience delivering software into production and working in cloud-native environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Familiarity with AI technologies and frameworks, rapid experimentation, and pragmatic problem-solving in ambiguous environments.
• Experience using observability tools to understand and troubleshoot system behavior, together with strong communication and collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience building distributed query engines.
• Experience building data warehouses, data lakes, or data engineering tools.
