Data & AI Governance Specialist (Data Governance/AI Governance): Embedding data and AI governance frameworks, controls, and regulatory compliance across a complex telecommunications organisation with an accent on governance maturity, risk management, and stakeholder engagement. Focus on facilitating governance forums, implementing ownership, metadata, classification, retention, and quality controls, and preparing evidence-based reporting for senior stakeholders.
Location: Hybrid role based in London, Birmingham or Bristol, United Kingdom

What you will do
- Act as the primary Data & AI Governance contact for business units and support adoption of governance policies, standards and frameworks.
- Partner with data owners, business stakeholders, engineering teams and compliance functions to embed governance controls.
- Lead working groups, facilitate Data & AI Councils and coordinate governance forums.
- Prepare governance reports, risk updates, compliance summaries and executive briefings.
- Monitor governance maturity, control adoption, compliance metrics, risks, issues and remediation activities.
- Support the evolution of the enterprise Data & AI Governance operating model, training and communications.
Requirements
- Proven experience in Data Governance, Information Governance, Data Management or Governance, Risk & Compliance environments.
- Strong knowledge of governance frameworks, policies, controls and operating models.
- Experience with GDPR, the EU AI Act, Ofcom or similar regulatory requirements.
- Experience preparing governance updates and briefing papers for senior stakeholders, facilitating forums and influencing across business areas.
- Knowledge of data ownership, classification, retention, metadata, data quality, compliance tracking and maturity metrics.
- Strong communication, presentation, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
Nice to have
- Experience in telecommunications, technology, financial services or another highly regulated industry.
- Knowledge of Responsible AI, emerging AI regulations, DORA or operational resilience.
- Familiarity with BT's Key Control Framework, Openreach or wholesale telecommunications obligations.
- Experience with organisation-wide governance transformation, training initiatives or metadata platforms.
