Controls Algorithm Engineering Intern (HVAC)

Location: La Crosse, Wisconsin, United States. Hybrid schedule with onsite work Monday through Thursday and flexible location on Fridays.

Salary: $22.50–$31.00 per hour.

What you will do

• Design and analyze control algorithms for HVAC and climate systems.
• Develop mathematical models and prototypes using Python, C++, or MATLAB.
• Apply numerical analysis, simulation, and statistical data analysis to algorithm development.
• Use scientific computing libraries and AI to clean, analyze, and validate real-world datasets.
• Benchmark algorithm performance and optimize system behavior.
• Collaborate through code reviews, documentation, testing, and research into emerging algorithmic methods.

Requirements

• Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or another highly quantitative discipline.
• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Foundation in HVAC, thermodynamics, system dynamics, and classical or modern control theory.
• Programming experience with Python, C++, or MATLAB and familiarity with NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, or equivalent tools.
• Familiarity with Git, software development processes, code reviews, documentation, and model testing.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice to have

• Leadership experience as a research assistant, teaching assistant, or academic/research project lead.
• Interest in research papers and emerging algorithmic trends.
