TL;DR
Applied Mechanical Engineer (Nuclear): Designing and evaluating mechanical systems for a novel advanced reactor with an accent on reactor systems, safety-related structures, pipe supports, electromechanical devices, and ASME codes. Focus on decomposing design requirements, maintaining the technical baseline, validating designs, and supporting fabrication, installation, testing, and reactor experimentation.

Location: Remote within the United States, with travel to the Idaho National Laboratory Research Campus in Idaho Falls or the Materials and Fuels Complex approximately once per month.

Salary: $110,000–$195,000 per year

What you will do

  • Apply mechanical engineering principles to the design of novel advanced nuclear reactor systems.
  • Design and evaluate systems involving heat, gas, air, fluids, and solid materials for safe, reliable, and predictable operation.
  • Develop designs for safety-related steel and concrete nuclear structures, high-temperature springs, pipe supports, and electromechanical devices.
  • Define and track design requirements using systems engineering and digital engineering tools.
  • Establish testing, inspection, quality, fabrication, construction, procurement, and configuration-management requirements.
  • Support experiment requirements, fabrication, assembly, installation, testing, integrated analyses, and reactor operations.

Requirements

  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program with at least 8 years of relevant experience, or a Master of Science degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience designing systems to applicable national consensus codes and standards, including ASME B31 series and BPVC.
  • Experience with safety-related steel and concrete nuclear structures, pipe supports, high-temperature springs, and precision technical plans, drawings, and models.
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary scientists and engineers and complete system design, evaluation, implementation, and project activities.

  • Experience with shielding systems.

Hiring process

  • The position is contingent upon contract award and funding.
