Head of Technical Excellence

What you will do

• Lead the engineering excellence framework and act as the senior technical authority across multidisciplinary 66kV–400kV transmission and distribution portfolios.
• Manage and develop Subject Matter Experts covering substations, overhead lines, civil engineering, and underground cable design.
• Drive safety-by-design principles, technical governance, quality assurance, and compliance with company management systems and UK regulatory frameworks.
• Provide final technical sign-off and assurance for complex engineering designs, ensuring alignment with Eurocodes, British Standards, National Grid Technical Specifications, and client requirements.
• Contribute senior technical input to bids, tenders, work-winning strategies, innovation initiatives, and engineering efficiency improvements.
• Own resource planning, recruitment, onboarding, competence management, career development, mentoring, and technical capability assessments.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering from an accredited institution.
• At least 10 years of engineering design and leadership experience in high-voltage power transmission and distribution infrastructure.
• Professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) through a relevant institution.
• Active senior membership and involvement in professional engineering bodies such as IET or CIGRE.
• Strong knowledge of transmission and distribution procedures, technical guidance, design handbooks, and UK health, safety, environmental, and waste-management legislation.
• Exceptional stakeholder management, negotiation, communication, analytical, and workload-prioritization skills.

Nice to have

• Experience as a Contractor Design Approval Engineer or Principal Designer representative.
• Training in CDM 2015, Temporary Works, and Impressed Voltages within the electricity supply industry.
