CTO (AI)

Location: Melbourne, Australia; hybrid with 2 days in the office

Salary: AUD 300,000+ excluding superannuation, plus equity

What you will do

• Own the engineering delivery system across Global Platform, EPD Operations, release engineering, QA infrastructure, security, and engineering tooling.
• Increase engineering throughput by scaling AI-assisted development, review, deployment, and quality systems.
• Implement feature flags, staged rollouts, fast rollback, trunk-based development, strict typing, schema contracts, and production-based quality measurement.
• Lead engineering organisation design, career frameworks, compensation architecture, hiring standards, and the Staff Engineer and Tech Lead layer.
• Personally review code and ship alongside the team while running constraint reviews and quarterly engineering planning.
• Represent engineering to the CEO, executive team, board, customers, and candidates.

Requirements

• Proven ability to diagnose and remove delivery bottlenecks across code review, deployment, and quality.
• Current hands-on technical depth and direct experience with AI-assisted or agentic delivery infrastructure, including sandboxes, evaluation harnesses, deterministic gates, and AI-assisted review.
• Strong experience structuring engineering teams, defining ownership, and developing Staff Engineers and Technical Leads.
• Experience leading engineering through a high-growth, high-change period and compressing delivery timelines without unnecessary process or tooling.
• Ability to operate between engineering and executive leadership, including board exposure.
• Essential tools: TypeScript, JavaScript, Node.js, React or Angular, MongoDB, and AWS or a comparable cloud platform.

Nice to have

• React Native or mobile development experience.
• Experience with observability tooling such as HyperDX, Datadog, Bugsnag, or Sentry.
• Infrastructure as code experience with CDK or Terraform.
• Experience with feature flag and release engineering platforms.
