Principal Software Engineer SD-WAN (Secure Networking)

Location: San Jose, California, 95002, United States. This role is designed as onsite, with the expectation of working primarily from an HPE office.

Salary: USD 155,500–315,000 annual base salary in California. Variable incentives may also be offered.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of secure SD-WAN products for enterprise site-to-site and remote-access connectivity.
• Drive performance optimization using DPDK, VPP, eBPF, hardware cryptographic accelerators, and large-scale packet processing techniques.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership and mentorship to senior engineers.
• Collaborate with product management, hardware, and QA teams to deliver networking and security solutions.
• Research and integrate security technologies, including quantum-safe cryptography, and manage secure development through penetration testing.
• Analyze vulnerabilities and CVEs, resolve complex security issues, and handle customer security escalations and threat analysis.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience focused on secure networking, embedded systems, and Linux kernel development.
• Deep expertise in IPSec/VPN technologies, including IKEv2, tunnel modes, TLS, SSL, and cryptographic libraries.
• 5+ years of experience with DPDK, VPP, eBPF, OpenSSL, AES, RSA, ECC, Intel QAT, or AES-NI.
• Experience with StrongSwan, Libreswan, OpenVPN, or WireGuard, plus FIPS 140-2/3 validation and Common Criteria certification.
• Advanced C/C++ and multithreaded system-level programming skills, with experience in hardware cryptographic offloading.
• Proven experience architecting and delivering large-scale secure networking products, with strong leadership and communication skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with quantum-safe cryptography and next-generation security protocols.
• SD-WAN product development experience for enterprise or service provider markets.
• Experience with next-generation firewalls, secure web gateways, IDS/IPS, or deep packet inspection.
