Sr. Counsel, Intellectual Property (Generative AI)

Location: Hybrid in Universal City, California, with office attendance required at least four days per week.

Salary: $175,000–$215,000 per year, plus bonus and long-term incentive eligibility.

What you will do

• Serve as the primary intellectual property advisor for an innovative new business initiative.
• Draft, negotiate, and advise on technology and IP transactions involving game engines, creator tools, online services, game studios, marketplace assets, joint development, and generative AI tools.
• Advise business, legal, engineering, product, and creative teams on IP provisions in commercial transactions.
• Develop open-source software policies, trade secret protection practices, and guidelines for generative AI content creation and use.
• Conduct IP and technology diligence for acquisitions, investments, and strategic partnerships.
• Develop frameworks for content moderation and user-generated content covering copyright, trademark, rights of publicity, DMCA, licensing, and IP ownership.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
• Good standing with the California State Bar, or another U.S. State Bar with eligibility to register as in-house counsel in California.
• Approximately 7+ years of experience in IP and technology transactions, including complex matters involving video games, interactive entertainment, technology, consumer products, or innovative businesses.
• Strong knowledge of video game, generative AI, user-generated content, content moderation, copyright, patent, trademark, rights of publicity, IP enforcement, and music licensing issues.
• Exceptional issue-spotting, problem-solving, business judgment, collaboration, and executive communication skills.

Nice to have

• Experience in video games and interactive entertainment, including game technologies, user-generated content, or game modifications.
• Experience supporting generative AI content creation and distribution.
• In-house legal experience at a video game publisher, developer, platform, or interactive media company.
• Experience partnering with product, engineering, advertising, marketing, and business leadership teams.
