VP, Operations & Maintenance

Location: On-site at the Monarch Compute Campus in Mason County, West Virginia, United States. Some travel and off-hours, weekend, and holiday coverage are required.

Base salary: $260,000–$450,000 USD annually, plus potential bonus, equity, and/or commission.

What you will do

• Lead safe, compliant, high-availability operations and maintenance for behind-the-meter power generation and energy infrastructure.
• Transition the facility from construction and commissioning into commercial operations, including procedures, staffing, training, qualifications, and operator handover.
• Govern responsibilities and performance across Nscale, the third-party operations provider, and OEM/dealer maintenance providers.
• Own plant availability, reliability, power quality, outage planning, maintenance programs, spare parts, inventory, and warranty coordination.
• Manage utility and grid interfaces, including interconnection, protective relaying, paralleling controls, metering, settlement data, curtailment, and islanding protocols.
• Build the operations organization, manage budgets and vendors, oversee emergency response, and provide operational risk and performance reporting.

Requirements

• 15+ years in power generation, mission-critical facilities, or heavy industrial operations, including at least 10 years in progressively senior leadership roles.
• Experience leading a greenfield power plant through startup, performance testing, acceptance, and commercial operation.
• Experience managing multidisciplinary utility-scale plant organizations with 25 or more direct and indirect reports.
• Experience owning plant O&M and capital budgets and managing OEM, maintenance contractor, and third-party operator contracts.
• Strong knowledge of generating equipment, medium-voltage switchgear, protective relaying, generator paralleling controls, NERC compliance, RTO/ISO interfaces, and environmental permitting.
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering. The role requires working in an energized construction environment, wearing arc-rated PPE, and navigating elevations and confined spaces as needed.

Nice to have

• MBA, PMP, PE, or equivalent professional credential.
• Experience with PJM and West Virginia or Appalachian-region generation assets.
• Experience with behind-the-meter or island-mode generation serving data centers, reciprocating engine fleets, battery energy storage systems, or water treatment systems.
