Research Technician I (Wildlife Research)

Location: Kingsville, Texas, with fieldwork and provided ranch housing in Maverick, Dimmit, and Webb Counties. The project is expected to run from December 1, 2026, through April 30, 2027.

What you will do

• Assist the capture team with trapping and collaring mountain lions under the supervision of the program manager and graduate students.
• Maintain camera traps to scout ranches and determine mountain lion presence.
• Scout and interpret tracks, scrapes, scats, and other mountain lion signs.
• Track collared mountain lions using telemetry and investigate GPS clusters.
• Collect and organize mountain lion scat and other biological samples.
• Support additional wildlife laboratory fieldwork in South Texas as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Two years of related experience.
• Valid US driver’s license required.
• Ability to navigate off-trail in remote settings, work independently, and cooperate with others.
• Ability to hike several miles daily while carrying equipment over uneven, heavily vegetated terrain and work in temperatures above 90°F.
• Export-control authorization and completion of a security-sensitive background investigation are required before employment.

Nice to have

• Current enrollment in or completion of a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, Ecology, or a related field.
