Assistant Professor (Precision Ranching)

Location: Sonora, Texas, with administrative housing at the San Angelo Research and Extension Center and a strong preference for primary presence at the Sonora Experiment Station. Research may also take place at associated ranches and satellite stations in Crockett, Edwards, Sutton, and Menard counties.

What you will do

• Develop and maintain an externally funded, nationally recognized research program addressing Texas rangeland and livestock challenges.
• Conduct fundamental, applied, and translational research in precision ranching technologies and integrated management systems.
• Apply smart sensing, remote monitoring, automation, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics to rangeland and livestock management.
• Publish research, mentor graduate students, and supervise research personnel.
• Collaborate with AgriLife, university, industry, government, nonprofit, and stakeholder partners.
• Translate research outcomes into practical applications, technology transfer, intellectual property, and economic impact.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Rangeland Science, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, or a closely related discipline by the appointment date.
• Expertise in rangeland production systems and management practices, particularly in semi-arid rangelands.
• Demonstrated experience with precision agriculture technologies, smart sensors, remote sensing, data analytics, automation, or related technologies.
• Record of publishing original research in peer-reviewed journals.
• Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, project management, and organizational skills.
• Ability to collaborate across disciplines, manage multiple priorities, and build relationships with regional stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience with range plant identification and field-based vegetation sampling.
• Academic, post-doctoral, or professional research experience.
• Experience securing competitive external funding or working with federal agencies.
• Experience building multidisciplinary research programs and engaging regional stakeholders.
