Substation Engineer (Power Systems)

Location: Remote

Salary: $125,000–$160,000 annually

What you will do

• Lead the design and engineering of electrical substations, including layouts, system designs, equipment specifications, drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
• Design and implement protection and control systems, conduct relay coordination studies, and configure protective relays.
• Evaluate vendor proposals with procurement teams and select equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, and protective relays.
• Manage substation projects from conceptual design through construction, testing, commissioning, and closeout.
• Coordinate with project managers, construction teams, regulatory agencies, and other cross-functional stakeholders.
• Oversee commissioning, troubleshoot technical issues, and maintain project reports, equipment manuals, as-built drawings, and design records.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution.
• 8–10 years of engineering experience with expertise in technical leadership, engineering quality, and complex problem solving.
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Strong understanding of engineering principles, applicable codes, client standards, regulatory requirements, and substation engineering.
• Leadership, communication, mentoring, organizational, and project coordination skills.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel occasionally as required.

Nice to have

• Experience serving as Engineer of Record.
• Experience leading QA/QC programs and technical review processes.
• Experience with complex, multidisciplinary engineering projects and client-facing project leadership.
• Experience developing engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.
