TL;DR

Location: In-person in San Francisco, California, United States

Total compensation: $184,000–$214,000, depending on experience, skills, location, and internal equity.

What you will do

  • Serve as embedded legal counsel to AI, R&D, engineering, data science, and product teams from product concept through release.
  • Advise on health data throughout the AI lifecycle, including HIPAA, HITECH, business associate arrangements, de-identification, model training, and evaluation.
  • Guide teams on AI-specific legal risks involving training data, model and API terms, output accuracy, clinical decision support, FDA software boundaries, intellectual property, and disclosure obligations.
  • Draft and negotiate data licenses, model and infrastructure provider agreements, research and clinical collaboration agreements, BAAs, DPAs, and pilot agreements.
  • Build product launch checklists, legal intake processes, playbooks, self-service guidance, and training for engineering and product teams.
  • Partner with Privacy, Security, Regulatory, Clinical, Trust & Safety, and Marketing teams on AI governance and monitor emerging AI and health data regulation.

Requirements

  • J.D. and active membership in the California bar, or eligibility to register as in-house counsel in California.
  • Approximately 5–9 years of legal experience, including meaningful in-house experience supporting a technology, digital health, or healthcare organization.
  • Experience as product counsel embedded with engineering and product teams.
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA, business associate relationships, de-identification standards, PHI, and healthcare data practices.
  • Working knowledge of AI and machine learning legal issues, including training data rights, model licensing, output liability, evaluation, monitoring, and emerging AI regulation.
  • Hands-on facility with AI tools, technical curiosity, strong written communication, and the ability to provide practical, risk-calibrated advice at product speed.
