Head of Legal

Location: Remote (Canada)

Salary: $298,820–$427,460 CAD base salary range

What you will do

• Build and evolve the strategy, operating model, priorities, and team for the legal function.
• Advise executives and cross-functional leaders on legal complexity, material risks, tradeoffs, and practical safeguards.
• Partner with Product, Engineering, Security, Sales, Finance, People, Operations, and Marketing.
• Provide guidance on corporate governance, product development, open-source software, intellectual property, privacy, data, AI, security, employment, commercial relationships, compliance, and international operations.
• Build scalable legal processes, policies, systems, and decision-making frameworks.
• Hire and empower legal team members, develop commercial legal capabilities, and manage outside counsel across multiple jurisdictions.

Requirements

• Significant legal experience, including meaningful in-house experience at a technology company and experience scaling legal functions in startup or high-growth environments.
• Law degree and active membership in at least one applicable state, provincial, or recognized bar association.
• Broad business judgment and experience advising executives on complex or consequential decisions.
• Experience partnering with technical, operational, and commercial teams and working with outside counsel.
• Track record of building or improving legal teams, programs, processes, or areas of practice.
• Strong communication, sound judgment, curiosity, and comfort operating between strategic leadership and hands-on execution.

Nice to have

• Experience with developer tools, infrastructure, cloud, networking, cybersecurity, data, or other technically complex software.
• Knowledge of open-source software, licensing, APIs, integrations, marketplaces, or technology partnerships.
• Experience with product counseling, privacy, data governance, intellectual property, AI-enabled products, or emerging technology.
• Experience supporting operations across multiple countries, including data residency, sovereignty, localization, or cross-border data matters.
• Experience building legal functions and leading in-house legal professionals in growth-stage companies.
