Senior Cloud Development Engineer (Kafka)

Location: Remote in the United States, Massachusetts

Base salary: $102,400–$153,200 annually, with potential annual bonus or commission and additional benefits.

What you will do

• Design and evolve Kafka-based cloud capabilities used across Pega Cloud.
• Advise application teams on architecture, sizing, rightsizing, capacity planning, partitioning, storage, retention, replication, and workload growth.
• Perform root-cause analysis for complex Kafka and distributed-systems issues.
• Convert recurring production problems into improvements to automation, diagnostics, platform standards, documentation, and self-service capabilities.
• Use and critically validate AI-assisted tools for log and configuration analysis, prototyping, automation, and documentation.
• Collaborate with cloud infrastructure, security, platform, application engineering, and operations teams while mentoring engineers and raising technical standards.

Requirements

• Strong hands-on experience with Apache Kafka in large-scale environments.
• Solid knowledge of Kafka architecture and behavior, including brokers, controllers, topics, partitions, replication, consumer groups, offsets, rebalancing, retention, and failure modes.
• Experience diagnosing complex distributed-systems problems and identifying underlying technical causes.
• Experience with AWS or Google Cloud and with Infrastructure as Code, Terraform, CI/CD, or GitOps workflows.
• Experience using Go, Python, Java, or another programming or scripting language for automation, tooling, or platform capabilities.
• Understanding of cloud networking, DNS, TLS, identity and access management, observability, and effective communication in English.
