Mechanisms Engineer (Aerospace): Developing spacecraft mechanisms from ideation through design, analysis, fabrication, testing, and flight with an accent on motorized assemblies, linkages, rotating hardware, and crew-operated systems. Focus on owning critical spacecraft hardware, applying CAD, GD&T, FEA, and manufacturing methods, and translating designs into flight-ready systems.

Location: Long Beach, California, United States; full-time onsite position with up to 10% travel to remote sites and vendors.

Salary: $112,340–$230,000 USD annually.

What you will do

  • Develop space mechanisms from ideation through design, analysis, fabrication, testing, and iteration.
  • Design and support motorized assemblies, linkages, spring and damper systems, rotating hardware, and crew-operated assemblies.
  • Own critical spacecraft hardware and take responsibility for its performance and delivery.
  • Collaborate with production teams to translate engineering designs into spacecraft hardware.
  • Perform trade studies and make engineering recommendations using first principles and available data.
  • Work with technicians, engineers, managers, and support teams in an integrated environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, aerospace, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least 2 years of experience designing, building, and/or testing mechanisms, structures, valves, or other mechanical systems.
  • Experience with CAD tools such as NX/Teamcenter, PTC Creo, or CATIA, including GD&T according to ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience with FEA tools such as FEMAP or ANSYS and knowledge of fatigue, fracture, and crack propagation.
  • Knowledge of metallic manufacturing processes, including machining, welding, riveting, bending, and assembly.
  • Must be a U.S. person or otherwise eligible for deemed export licensing due to U.S. export control requirements.

Nice to have

  • Experience with spacecraft or launch vehicle mechanisms and mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience with aerospace metals, plastics, and composites.
  • Knowledge of test methods, test setups, and data acquisition systems.
  • Experience in rapid prototyping, quick iteration, and commercial space or human spaceflight.
