TL;DR
Senior Optomechanical Engineer I/II (SolidWorks/Space Hardware): Designing and delivering opto-mechanical hardware for optical payloads, camera systems, sensor assemblies, precision mechanisms, tooling, and electromechanical systems with an accent on alignment, stiffness, thermal stability, manufacturability, and flight qualification. Focus on leading designs through analysis, procurement, integration, precision alignment, environmental testing, and flight delivery while solving complex tolerance, vibration, and thermal-elastic challenges.

Location: Onsite in Pasadena, California, United States. The role is based at hirify.global Robotics and requires eligibility to work with U.S. ITAR-regulated technology.

Base salary: $125,000–$214,000 USD per year for California.

Company

hirify.global is an end-to-end space company building rockets, spacecraft, optical systems, payloads, and other critical spaceflight subsystems.

What you will do

  • Lead opto-mechanical and precision mechanical design projects from requirements definition through flight delivery.
  • Design camera systems, optical payloads, sensor assemblies, lens and filter mounts, pointing assemblies, focus mechanisms, launch locks, stages, gimbals, and alignment tooling.
  • Develop mechanical architectures, interfaces, packaging, tolerances, integration plans, tooling, fixtures, and ground support equipment.
  • Perform or support structural, thermal, tolerance, finite element, and structural-thermal-optical performance analyses.
  • Support assembly, integration, precision alignment, troubleshooting, environmental testing, qualification, inspection, and test-data analysis.
  • Lead design, manufacturing, and test reviews; coordinate vendors and cross-functional stakeholders; mentor junior engineers; and improve design standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, optical, mechatronics, robotics, or another engineering discipline.
  • At least 5 years of mechanical engineering experience for Senior Engineer I or 8 years for Senior Engineer II.
  • Experience delivering spaceflight hardware through design, build, integration, environmental testing, qualification, and flight delivery.
  • Experience designing precision mechanical, opto-mechanical, aerospace, sensor, or electromechanical hardware.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, production drawings, GD&T, tolerance analysis, FEA, STOP analysis, and mechanical design documentation.
  • For U.S. office work, candidates must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, asylees, or eligible to obtain the required ITAR authorizations.

Nice to have

  • Master’s or PhD in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Rapid conceptual design, prototyping, hands-on build, integration, alignment, and testing experience.
  • Experience with preliminary structural, vibration, thermal, or thermal-elastic analysis.
  • Experience overseeing final analysis, environmental and production testing, instrumentation, fixture design, and test-data analysis.

Culture & Benefits

  • Fast-paced hardware development environment focused on ambitious space missions and reliable flight systems.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, including a company-sponsored HSA option.
  • Three weeks of paid vacation, five sick days, paid holidays, parental leave, disability insurance, and life insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match, employee stock purchase program, and company equity eligibility.
