Mechanical Engineering Intern for Photonics Physics Package R&D

What you will do

• Support the design, build, integration, and operation of cryogenic ultra-high-vacuum test systems for quantum computing technologies.
• Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and assembly documentation for mechanical components, fixtures, and test hardware.
• Fabricate, assemble, troubleshoot, and improve experimental ion-trap test systems with engineers and scientists.
• Collect and analyze data to validate hardware performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
• Support root-cause investigations, failure analysis, design reviews, documentation, and configuration management.
• Design and build fixtures, tooling, and test hardware for photonic device characterization and validation.

Requirements

• Actively pursuing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
• Expected graduation after December 2027.
• Must have United States work authorization that does not now or in the future require visa sponsorship, including H-1B, F-1 OPT, TN, or other non-immigrant status.
• Must meet U.S. national security requirements regarding nationality.
• Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and collaborate in multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks or Onshape is valued.

Nice to have

• Interest in vacuum systems, cryogenics, precision mechanics, optics, photonics, scientific instrumentation, or quantum computing.
• Hands-on experience designing, fabricating, or assembling mechanical systems.
• Familiarity with engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and design for manufacturing.
• Experience with rapid prototyping tools, machine shops, vendors, or structural, thermal, vibration, and finite element analysis.
• Programming or scripting experience with Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar tools.
