Staff Software Engineer, Financial Crimes (Fintech)

Location: San Francisco, CA, United States; hybrid collaboration with teams coming into the office 10+ days per month

Salary: $212,000–$265,000 USD annual base salary for positions based in California, excluding equity, bonuses, and commissions.

What you will do

• Set architectural direction for the financial crimes compliance control plane, including real-time screening orchestration, decision and data planes, resilience, observability, and vendor-agnostic integrations.
• Lead complex technical problems involving multi-vendor failover, sub-second decisioning, high-throughput processing, partial dependency failures, and regulator-grade auditability.
• Translate regulatory obligations and organizational goals into durable engineering primitives, technical roadmaps, milestones, and execution plans.
• Anticipate platform risks and scaling constraints, leading initiatives that improve resilience and prevent incidents.
• Partner with senior leaders across functions to turn regulatory requirements into engineering solutions.
• Set production ownership standards, mentor engineers, and improve design quality and reliability across the team.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building production backend systems.
• Deep expertise in Java or comparable JVM languages, Go, or Rust.
• Experience owning architecture for complex distributed systems at scale and defining designs adopted by other engineers and teams.
• Strong knowledge of resilience patterns, failover, graceful degradation, idempotency, and high-throughput real-time decisioning.
• Strong API design skills with REST and/or gRPC, plus working knowledge of Kubernetes, observability tooling such as Grafana or OpenTelemetry, and cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS.
• Experience mentoring engineers and operating in ambiguous, regulated environments involving audits, regulator findings, and compliance obligations.

• Experience in fintech, payments, identity, or compliance technology.
• Systems architecture experience in other high-stakes domains.
