Staff Software Engineer, Backend (FinTech)

Location: USA. Roles posted in New York, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City require hybrid attendance 2–3 days per week; candidates outside these areas may be eligible for relocation assistance.

Salary: $170,000–$212,500 USD for Tier 3 locations, $180,000–$225,000 USD for Tier 2 locations, and $200,000–$250,000 USD for Tier 1 locations.

What you will do

• Design, build, and scale services for payments, billing, identity, partner integrations, wallets, and settlement systems.
• Set the long-term technical vision and architecture for complex distributed systems.
• Lead scoping, design, implementation, and production rollouts across engineering teams.
• Build robust, fault-tolerant systems with external dependencies, REST APIs, message queues, and data pipelines.
• Collaborate with product, design, engineering, and technical stakeholders on scope and delivery.
• Mentor engineers and establish technical best practices across the organization.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of software engineering experience and 6 years of Java experience.
• Experience setting technical direction for complex distributed systems and leading or mentoring engineers.
• Experience building fault-tolerant systems, maintaining data pipelines, and working with external dependencies.
• Proficiency with Java, Spring, Gradle, JUnit, and JVM memory, performance, and garbage-collection tuning.
• Experience with service-oriented architecture, REST APIs, message queues, scalable architectures, AWS, and containerization.
• Ability to work from the USA and, where applicable, meet local hybrid office expectations.

Nice to have

• Experience with CI/CD, GitHub Actions, Git, automation, observability, and DataDog.
• Experience with big data platforms such as Snowflake.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code using CDK and Terraform.
• Experience influencing cross-functional strategy and elevating engineering standards.
