Senior Backend Engineer (Java)

Location: Fully remote from anywhere in the United States, with East Coast business hours.

Salary: $160,000–$175,000 annually, plus up to 20% profit-share bonus.

What you will do

• Build and ship backend features end-to-end, from implementation through testing and deployment.
• Modernize legacy codebases through pragmatic refactoring and technical-debt reduction.
• Improve production reliability, performance, observability, and user experience by diagnosing issues and resolving bugs.
• Define backend architecture, engineering standards, tooling, and maintainable development patterns.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, and Engineering through pairing, code reviews, requirements clarification, and tradeoff analysis.
• Mentor engineers and support knowledge sharing through technical guidance and feedback.

Requirements

• 5–7+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency in Java and experience with at least one additional backend or frontend language.
• Experience improving legacy codebases and modernizing systems safely over time.
• Strong automated testing skills and a commitment to clean, performant, maintainable code.
• Strong technical judgment, communication skills, and the ability to explain solutions and tradeoffs.
• Collaborative approach to pairing, code reviews, knowledge sharing, learning, and mentoring.

Nice to have

• Experience with ecommerce or payment products and high-traffic consumer applications.
• Experience with CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, and microservices architectures.
• Experience improving production performance and observability.
• Experience mentoring junior developers.
