Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Columbia, MD, United States; hybrid with 1–2 days per week in the Columbia office

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement complex Java-based software capabilities for computer-based systems.
• Design enterprise APIs, RESTful web services, and microservices.
• Integrate AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Gemini into daily engineering workflows.
• Use autonomous agents for multi-file feature development, codebase refactoring, and automated unit and integration test generation.
• Manage context across multi-repository architectures and audit generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment.
• Collaborate with engineers to deliver reliable software while troubleshooting issues and meeting multiple deadlines.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance are required; clearance is not required on day one.
• At least 5 years of software engineering experience with modern Java frameworks and libraries, or an equivalent education and experience combination.
• Experience with Java, Spring, Guava, object-oriented programming, enterprise APIs, REST, and microservices architecture.
• Experience with Linux, Git, Nexus, Maven, configuration management, testing, and the agile software lifecycle.
• Ability to work in a hybrid environment, attending the Columbia, MD office an average of 1–2 days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience with Claude Code, Gemini, or other agentic coding workflows.
• Experience with NiFi, Kafka, AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, distributed or NoSQL databases, Elasticsearch, Postgres, or Trino.
• Experience with Python, Flask, Vue, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and standard development tools such as Jira, Confluence, and GitHub Enterprise.
• Familiarity with big data platforms and scripting.
