TL;DR
Bioinformatics Developer (Genomics): Maintaining and developing the DECIPHER platform by integrating molecular biology and phenotypic data, deploying bioinformatics tools, and creating genomic data structures and interfaces with an accent on variant annotation, clinical genomics, and large-scale data processing. Focus on analysing genomic data, designing data-driven web applications, and translating clinical stakeholder requirements into reliable features.

Location: Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom; hybrid working with an expectation to be on site at least two days per week, including Thursdays as the team day.

Salary: £3,452.05 or £3,861.91 per month after tax, depending on Grade 5 or 6, plus benefits and financial allowances.

What you will do

  • Maintain and develop the DECIPHER platform for rare disease research, diagnosis, and clinical data sharing.
  • Assess, analyse, reformat, and integrate molecular biology and phenotypic data from public resources.
  • Deploy bioinformatics tools and analyse genomic data, including variant annotations.
  • Design and test data structures and user interfaces representing the human genome and genetic disorders.
  • Translate stakeholder requirements into feature specifications and investigate data issues through ad hoc analysis.
  • Support DECIPHER users, collaborate with internal and external groups, and represent the project at meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in biological, clinical, or computational sciences, plus a higher degree or equivalent experience in bioinformatics, software engineering, or computational sciences.
  • Experience with bioinformatics standards, tools, resources, and methods for managing and processing genomics data.
  • Experience designing and using large-scale relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL.
  • Proficiency in R or Python for data manipulation and analysis, JavaScript development, and a UNIX/Linux environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, delivery discipline, communication skills, and a professional approach to user support.
  • Ability to work on site in Hinxton at least two days per week.

Nice to have

  • Experience with genomic or molecular biology datasets, clinical data, or ontologies.
  • Experience developing reactive, data-driven web applications with Vue, React, or Angular.
  • Experience working in an HPC bioinformatics environment.
  • Experience collaborating across disciplines or training and supporting web-tool users.
