Sr. Research Engineer – AI/ML Image Processing & Computational Photography

Location: Hybrid in San Jose, CA or Culver City, CA with 3 days in person, or fully remote after an extensive period of on-site training. Remote work may require monthly business trips to the main office; occasional travel to Japan is required.

Annual base salary: $150,000–$165,000, plus a 10% annual bonus target.

What you will do

• Research, design, and develop AI/ML methods for image processing, computational photography, and computer vision.
• Formulate research problems and design datasets, neural network architectures, training processes, and evaluations.
• Conduct feasibility studies and rapidly prototype concepts for potential commercialization.
• Benchmark algorithms against state-of-the-art methods and improve accuracy, efficiency, and robustness.
• Document methodologies, experimental results, and technical designs while communicating findings to researchers and engineers in the U.S. and Japan.
• Draft invention disclosures, collaborate with patent attorneys, and submit technical articles as required.

Requirements

• PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or a related field; exceptional candidates with an MS and 3+ years of related experience may be considered.
• Strong practical experience developing deep learning, machine learning, or AI algorithms from problem formulation through dataset design, architecture development, training, and evaluation.
• Experience with image or video processing, camera ISP, computational photography, low-level computer vision, or computer vision.
• Research experience with peer-reviewed publications and rigorous experimental design and hypothesis testing.
• Proficiency in Python and PyTorch or a similar ML framework; familiarity with C/C++ and Linux.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, curiosity, creativity, and willingness to tackle challenging problems.
