Sr Counsel, Data Governance

Location: Remote US

US base salary: $204,000–$226,000 per year

What you will do

• Lead negotiations covering data use, ownership, sharing, retention, deletion, de-identification, AI training, system outputs, and related intellectual property rights.
• Operate the privacy program covering HIPAA, state privacy and consumer health data requirements, notices, consents, consumer rights, incidents, breaches, and regulatory inquiries.
• Administer the AI governance program, including governance frameworks, inventories, risk assessments, approval workflows, responsible AI controls, and regulatory change management.
• Build and maintain data maps, records of processing, data classification standards, contractual obligation repositories, retention controls, and third-party data reviews.
• Partner with Product, Engineering, Security, AI, Commercial, and User Support teams to implement privacy by design, permissible data uses, notices, consents, and operational controls.
• Lead compliance monitoring, audits, client assurance requests, incident remediation, policies, playbooks, training, and executive reporting.

Requirements

• 8+ years of legal experience with substantial healthcare regulatory, privacy, and compliance experience in a HIPAA-regulated organization; healthcare experience is required.
• Significant experience independently negotiating complex data rights with enterprise healthcare clients and partners.
• Experience operating healthcare privacy and compliance programs, including risk assessments, incident and breach response, audits, monitoring, corrective actions, and remediation.
• Advanced AI fluency, automation capability, and experience using or building AI agents for legal and compliance work.
• Experience with AI governance, including emerging AI laws, inventories, risk assessments, approval workflows, responsible AI controls, and monitoring.
• Active license to practice law and membership in good standing with a U.S. state bar required.

Nice to have

• Experience with international privacy requirements and cross-border data transfers.
• CIPP/US, CIPM, AIGP, or similar privacy and AI governance certifications.
• Experience building governance programs at a growth-stage or high-growth company.
• Experience managing client trust, security questionnaires, certifications, attestations, or enterprise assurance programs.
