Staff Software Engineer - OS, Robot Software (Embedded Linux)

Location: Sunnyvale, California, USA; hybrid

Salary: $210,000–$290,000 per year, plus equity

What you will do

• Own the creation and maintenance of Linux kernels and device drivers for vehicle sensors and peripherals.
• Develop and maintain hirify.global’s bespoke Linux distribution using Yocto.
• Build high-quality, reliable C++ software that remains observable and debuggable on remotely deployed vehicles with limited connectivity.
• Create fault-tolerant software and comprehensive diagnostics for the autonomous-driving fleet.
• Collaborate with product, project, engineering management, hardware, supply chain, field engineering, and reliability engineering teams.
• Promote engineering best practices in testing, documentation, tooling, mentorship, and collaboration.

Requirements

• Experience developing high-performance embedded Linux systems software in C and C++ across the full software development lifecycle.
• Expertise in embedded Linux, including the kernel, device tree, boot sequence, secure boot, and user-space application development.
• Experience with Yocto and embedded Linux build systems.
• Strong debugging skills covering performance issues, stack traces, core dumps, disk writes, system load, memory bottlenecks, external devices, and threading.
• Strong understanding of IPC mechanisms and middleware for high-throughput robotics applications, such as ROS.
• Availability for a full-time hybrid role based in Sunnyvale, California, USA.

Nice to have

• Experience with robotics or automotive platforms such as Nvidia Jetson or Nvidia Drive.
• Experience with embedded real-time operating systems such as QNX.
