Engineering Manager (AI)

Location: Primary residence required in or near an approved city in the United States, Canada, or Mexico; occasional in-person attendance is required.

Salary: $154,500–$267,500 annually in the United States outside California; California ranges from $187,500 to $281,500. Canada ranges from CAD 198,000 to CAD 252,500.

What you will do

• Own the vision and strategy for a real-time, AI-native content ingestion platform.
• Make architectural decisions for high-scale distributed systems, streaming pipelines, and document transformation.
• Integrate AI capabilities that parse, classify, safety-check, enrich, and ground documents for readers and AI agents.
• Lead, hire, and develop a founding team of backend and AI data engineers.
• Run the team roadmap as a product, defining priorities, commitments, reliability standards, and operational practices.
• Partner with product, trust and safety, content understanding, supply, and AI platform leaders on a shared content strategy.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years leading backend, data-infrastructure, or platform engineering teams.
• Depth in high-throughput distributed systems, event-driven architectures, streaming, and large-scale ingestion and transformation pipelines.
• Experience integrating ML models or LLM-based document processing into production systems, or strong intent to do so.
• Experience building platform products with interfaces and SLAs used by other teams.
• Security-minded engineering practices, including safe handling of untrusted input, least-privilege access, and data protection.
• Strong focus on reliability, observability, on-call health, and clear cross-functional communication.

Nice to have

• Experience with document processing, PDF and rich-document formats, media transcoding, or content-serving systems.
• Familiarity with RAG, chunking, embedding pipelines, vector search, or LLM grounding systems.
• Experience with UGC or marketplace platforms where content quality, trust, and scale intersect.
• Experience founding a new engineering team and platform from the ground up.
