NGS Scientist I

Location: Chicago, United States; onsite laboratory role

Salary: $75,000–$95,000 per year for Chicago; compensation may vary by location, qualifications, and experience.

What you will do

• Develop, optimize, and validate molecular assays and NGS-based workflows in a CAP/CLIA/NYSDOH-regulated clinical laboratory.
• Design, execute, and analyze R&D experiments, qualification studies, and validation studies for reagents, instruments, equipment, and methods.
• Interpret experimental data, troubleshoot issues, perform root-cause analysis, and improve laboratory processes.
• Support laboratory automation, liquid-handling robotics, and implementation of new workflows.
• Document methods, materials, and results; train and mentor junior scientific staff.
• Collaborate with cross-functional technical and non-technical stakeholders while managing multiple priorities; travel up to 10% as needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of relevant experience or a Master’s degree with 2+ years of relevant experience in molecular biology, assay development, or a related field.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, experimental design, collaboration, and communication skills.
• Experience with DNA/RNA extraction and purification, PCR-based techniques including PCR, qPCR, RT-PCR, or ddPCR, and nucleic acid quantitation and analysis.
• Ability to interpret results using scientific literature and subject-matter expertise to refine experimental design.
• Strong organization, attention to detail, adaptability, and commitment to quality and accuracy.

Nice to have

• NGS library preparation, hybrid capture, and sequencing workflow experience.
• Laboratory automation, liquid-handling robotics, clinical laboratory, LIMS, or laboratory data systems experience.
