Correspondent, Justice Department

Location: Hybrid in Washington, D.C.; must reside in Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia and work from the office or an on-site reporting location at least 3 days per week.

Salary: $127,500–$142,000 USD per year, plus benefits.

What you will do

• Report and produce daily news, contextual enterprise pieces, and investigative stories on the Department of Justice, immigration enforcement, and federal legal policy.
• Build and maintain source networks across government agencies, legal institutions, advocacy organizations, and affected communities.
• Analyze court filings, regulatory decisions, and legislative proposals for accurate explanatory journalism.
• Deliver live and recorded reporting for newsmagazines, breaking news specials, podcasts, and member-station programming.
• Collaborate with editors and producers to package reporting for broadcast, digital, text, and multimedia platforms.
• Gather field audio, conduct interviews, and complete editorial and administrative work under tight deadlines.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of professional journalism experience covering complex legal, governmental, or regulatory affairs at a national or regional level.
• Demonstrated ability to produce accurate, contextual enterprise stories and breaking news on deadline.
• Experience developing professional source networks and managing multiple overlapping stories.
• Ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-moving newsroom and work with diverse perspectives.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Residence in Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia and in-person availability at least 3 days per week are required.

Nice to have

• Experience covering the U.S. Department of Justice, federal courts, or federal immigration enforcement.
• Experience explaining complex legal, policy, or political topics for broadcast, podcasts, or live audio.
• Enterprise scoops, investigative reporting, and original document or agency-based sourcing.
• Multiplatform production experience across digital features, podcasts, and visual or social explainers.
