Software Engineer, Distributed Systems

Location: San Francisco Bay Area, including Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties. Candidates must reside in the area or be willing to relocate.

Salary: $180,000–$220,000 USD base salary per year, plus equity and benefits. Relocation assistance may be available.

What you will do

• Build and operate large-scale, reliable, and performant distributed systems.
• Develop and maintain critical services supporting Discord's text chat infrastructure and real-time user session updates.
• Collaborate with product teams to create features on top of the infrastructure.
• Write application code and manage the underlying infrastructure.
• Improve the reliability, performance, and scalability of high-impact services.

Requirements

• Must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area.
• 2+ years of experience designing and writing backend systems.
• Experience solving complex distributed systems problems.
• Experience operating and maintaining critical tier 0 services.
• Knowledge of monitoring and alerting best practices.
• Familiarity with open-source software and the ability to investigate library source code.

Nice to have

• Experience with Elixir or Rust.
• Experience with cloud environments such as GCP or AWS.
• Knowledge of Salt, Terraform, or Kubernetes.
• Contributions to open-source projects.
• Experience building Discord bots or applications.
