Principal Engineer, Distributed Systems (Security)

Location: On-site in New York, NY or Sunnyvale, CA; remote work is not available.

Base salary: $227,000–$303,000 per year, plus discretionary bonus, equity awards, and benefits.

What you will do

• Define architecture for multi-region distributed systems, including service placement, replication, failover, traffic management, and disaster recovery.
• Lead the design of high-scale authorization systems covering policy authoring, evaluation, enforcement, auditability, and multi-tenant integration.
• Provide technical direction for a Security Token Service and an API Authentication Gateway, including token lifecycle, key rotation, revocation, and secure service-to-service access.
• Improve reliability and operability through SLOs, error budgets, observability, incident response, capacity planning, load testing, and production readiness reviews.
• Establish standards for API design, threat modeling, cryptographic key management, secrets handling, and operational readiness.
• Mentor senior and staff engineers, lead architecture reviews, and align engineering, security, infrastructure, networking, platform, product, and customer-facing teams.

Requirements

• 12+ years of experience designing and building production software, including substantial distributed-systems and platform-infrastructure experience.
• Principal, staff-plus, distinguished, or equivalent technical leadership experience across multiple teams or a broad technical domain.
• Deep expertise in scalability, availability, latency, consistency, concurrency, partition tolerance, caching, replication, and failure recovery.
• Experience operating security-sensitive or reliability-critical services in production.
• Strong software engineering experience with Go, Java, Rust, C++, Python, or equivalent systems and backend technologies.
• Ability to work on-site in New York, NY or Sunnyvale, CA.

Nice to have

• Experience with authorization platforms, identity systems, Security Token Services, API authentication gateways, or service-mesh authorization.
• Experience with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, SCIM, JWT, mTLS, SPIFFE/SPIRE, cryptography, HSMs, certificate authorities, and secrets management.
• Experience with four-nines availability, multi-region or multi-cloud architecture, disaster recovery, data residency, tenant isolation, and regional failover.
• Experience with Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure, service networking, distributed storage, messaging systems, and multi-cluster operations.
• Experience supporting enterprise customers, regulated workloads, or compliance-sensitive deployment models.
