Lead AI Software Engineer

Location: Rockville, MD, United States; on-site. Travel may be required across the United States.

Salary: $125,000–$175,000 per year

What you will do

• Lead application and feature development planning with the Technical PM and Solutions Architect.
• Coordinate and lead developers and DBAs across enterprise application development, enhancement, and maintenance.
• Implement AHRQ’s Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning strategy, including integration and deployment of AI/ML capabilities.
• Facilitate Agile Scrum ceremonies and support delivery against the product roadmap.
• Develop reusable, clean, scalable code; support CI pipelines; and optimize application performance.
• Lead code reviews, security and data protection efforts, technical documentation, stakeholder collaboration, and developer mentorship.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 10 years of relevant experience; degree substitutions may reduce the requirement to 8 years of experience.
• Experience with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning engineering, generative AI, and large language models.
• Experience in AI solution architecture, systems engineering, prototyping, testing, evaluation, performance assessment, and monitoring.
• Experience integrating and deploying AI/ML capabilities in approved cloud, application, and infrastructure environments.
• Ability to obtain Public Trust clearance and work on-site in Rockville, MD.

Nice to have

• Proficiency in Java, Python, JavaScript, C, C++, or other programming languages.
• Knowledge of database systems and cloud platforms.
• Familiarity with Agile and Scrum methodologies.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and task-management skills.
