TL;DR
Human Resource Generalist (HRG) (Human Resources): Supporting recruitment, employee relations, policy development, workplace safety, benefits administration, and culturally grounded HR programming with an accent on Indigenous values, equity, trauma-informed practice, and legislative compliance. Focus on building inclusive onboarding and workforce-development processes, integrating Indigenous knowledge into HR practices, and maintaining respectful, safe workplace culture in Sault Ste. Marie.

Location: 122 East St., Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada; onsite

Salary: CAD 58,000–65,000 per year

What you will do

  • Provide confidential HR services, maintain employee records, support HR communications, and strengthen employee engagement and workplace culture.
  • Lead inclusive recruitment and onboarding processes that prioritize Indigenous employment.
  • Support employee relations through culturally safe, trauma-informed, and restorative approaches.
  • Develop and implement HR policies aligned with employment standards, human rights requirements, organizational values, and funder obligations.
  • Collaborate with the Health & Safety Committee to promote workplace safety and wholistic employee well-being.
  • Integrate Indigenous knowledge systems, land-based practices, community accountability, and guidance from Elders and Knowledge Keepers into HR practices.

Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in Human Resources, Indigenous Studies, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 2–5 years of human resources experience, preferably in an Indigenous or non-profit setting.
  • Experience working with an urban Indigenous community and knowledge of Indigenous cultural practices, protocols, and/or language.
  • Experience administering group benefits and pension plans.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and HRIS systems, plus strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed workplace wellness, anti-racist and decolonial HR practices, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, and funder compliance requirements.

Nice to have

  • HR designation such as CHRP, CPHR, or SHRM-CP, or progress toward certification.
  • Familiarity with the Friendship Centre Movement at the national or provincial level.
