Staff Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Remote in the U.S. or Bay Area, with periodic travel required

Salary: $150,000–$226,000 USD per year

What you will do

• Design, develop, deploy, and maintain critical backend software in a Java environment.
• Design and implement scalable solutions for the Software Engineering Insights product, which integrates with more than 40 developer tools.
• Own key system components, including functional specifications, design documents, implementation quality, and peer reviews.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot complex issues in distributed computing and production environments.
• Collaborate with Site Reliability Engineers, DevOps, and cross-functional teams through short, iterative release cycles.

Requirements

• 8–10+ years of experience developing highly scalable distributed applications, products, and backend services using Java.
• Deep understanding of building and deploying distributed, resilient software.
• Experience with relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL.
• Strong problem-solving, debugging, and software design skills.
• Experience working in short release cycles and agile development environments.
• Valid authorization to work in the U.S. is required.

Nice to have

• SQL query tuning and performance optimization experience.
• Experience with Elasticsearch or Solr.
• Experience with applications hosted on AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Familiarity with Docker and CI/CD processes.
