Staff Software Engineer - AMR Planning & Controls (Robotics)

Location: Hybrid, with regular reporting to a specific location at least three times per week; Sunnyvale, California or Warren, Michigan. The role may be eligible for relocation benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the design, implementation, and deployment of behavioral planning, path-planning, motion-control, and trajectory-generation algorithms for autonomous mobile robots.
• Develop planning and control solutions that operate safely and efficiently under kinematic, dynamic, hardware, and real-time constraints.
• Collaborate with localization, perception, and hardware teams to integrate the robotics software stack.
• Build and use offline and simulation-based tools to evaluate, benchmark, and validate algorithms.
• Contribute to software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, and field-testing workflows.
• Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and help define software architecture and engineering practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in robotics, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
• At least five years of experience in motion planning, controls, or autonomy for real-world robotics systems or autonomous vehicles.
• Experience with numerical optimization, nonlinear constrained optimization, model predictive control, or advanced robotics algorithms.
• Strong programming skills in C++ and Python.
• Experience developing computationally efficient software for real-time performance requirements.
• Understanding of robotics systems, including localization, mapping, planning, and control.

Nice to have

• Experience designing and implementing robotic or vehicle systems.
• Knowledge of ROS, ROS 2, and Navigation2.
• Experience with simulation frameworks, HIL testing, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Understanding of safety-critical software development practices.
• Background in autonomous vehicles, ADAS, or industrial automation.
