TL;DR
Mechanical Engineering Intern (Robotics R&D) (Medical Robotics): Designing, prototyping, integrating, and testing complex mechanical systems for surgical robotic platforms with an accent on CAD, manufacturing, assembly, and validation. Focus on rapidly prototyping hardware, troubleshooting and calibrating robotic instruments, documenting root-cause analysis, and supporting clinical assessments.

Location: Santa Clara, California, United States; hybrid work arrangement. The internship runs from June 1–August 20, 2027, or June 21–September 10, 2027.

Salary: $32/hour for Sophomore students, $35.50/hour for Junior students, $39/hour for Senior students, $46.50/hour for Master's students, and $61/hour for PhD students.

What you will do

  • Design and prototype mechanical assemblies and medical robotic systems using CAD, manufacturing, assembly, testing, and documentation.
  • Generate design concepts, present them, and participate in design reviews.
  • Rapidly prototype components using 3D printing, machining, hand tools, and bonding.
  • Support hardware and instrument integration, calibration, troubleshooting, validation, and root-cause analysis.
  • Document designs and test procedures and participate in clinical assessments using inanimate anatomical models.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechatronics, controls, software, and clinical engineering teams.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's, graduate, or PhD program and returning to academic study after the internship.
  • Studying aerospace, automation, biomedical, mechanical, mechatronics, robotics engineering, or a related field.
  • Mechanical design experience involving CAD modeling, assembly, or testing.
  • Ability to analyze problems, develop solutions collaboratively, and work independently with minimal support.
  • Available for full-time work of 40 hours per week and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Permanent US work authorization is required; employment visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

  • Ability to rapidly learn and use AI tools and platforms.
  • Knowledge of medical device development, design controls, materials, injection molding, machining, and robotic hardware or controls.
  • Experience with machining and hardware tools.
  • Interest in healthcare innovation and robotics.
