Software Engineering, Optical Transport and IP Networking Intern

Pay: $25.50–$35.00 per hour

What you will do

• Conduct lab engineering activities for optical transport, routing, switching, and software-based networking solutions.
• Develop software and scripts, automate workflows, test solutions, and troubleshoot issues in a lab environment.
• Configure, validate, and document Layer 3/IP networking scenarios, including routing and switching.
• Execute test plans, collect and analyze results, and document technical findings.
• Create technical documentation, training materials, demonstrations, and knowledge-transfer content.
• Collaborate with global technical teams across software, optical networking, and IP networking initiatives.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related degree program.
• Foundational software engineering skills and experience with at least one programming or scripting language such as Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript, or Bash.
• Basic understanding of version control, debugging, testing, and technical documentation.
• Foundational knowledge of Layer 3/IP networking, including IP addressing, routing, switching, TCP/IP, and common network protocols.
• Interest in optical transport telecommunications, including DWDM, OTN, coherent optics, photonic systems, or carrier networking technologies.
• Ability to work with hardware, software, network elements, test tools, technical procedures, and engineering documentation in a lab environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with Python scripting, automation, REST APIs, Linux, Git, or similar development tools.
• Coursework, laboratory, project, or co-op experience in telecommunications or networking.
• Familiarity with OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, MPLS, optical networking, fiber optics, wavelength division multiplexing, OTN, or coherent transmission.
• Experience creating lab notes, topology diagrams, technical documentation, or presentations.
• Interest in network automation, software-defined networking, cloud-based tools, or test automation.
